Itâs my fifth day on Brookhaven Island and my sixth day beyond the walls of the Tower. Iâve settled into the rhythms of daily life at camp, and Iâve been making myself useful in any way I can. Iâm the only one here whoâs had any kind of medical training, and though it is unofficial since I never went to medical or nursing school, I picked up a great deal from Mom and the other medical staff while at the Tower.
Iâve treated two of the men already, one with a deep gash on his arm thatâs become infected and the other with two broken toes, though thereâs not much to do for him except taping up the digits and advising him to cool his foot in the running river.
I check in with the man with the gash by the fire that morning, and Iâm pleased with the way itâs healing up.
âMorning, Beauty,â says a gruff voice beside me, and I look around to find Dexer standing close to me by the fire. Heâs dressed in jeans and a T-shirt thatâs tight across his chest and biceps.
My gaze lingers on all the tattoos and scars on his arms, and then his full lips as he takes a mouthful of coffee. Heâs so sexy. Iâm thrilled he doesnât hide away from me anymore because I want to look at him all the time.
âGood morning,â I reply with a smile.
âYou two have been so friendly since you spent the night away from camp,â drawls a familiar voice. Blaize has arrived at the campfire and he glances back and forth between us, a knowing smirk on his face.
Blaize canât know anything because I havenât said a word, and yet I have the feeling he does know.
âIf thereâs a new romance brewing at camp, weâre all dying to know about it. Arenât we, boys?â Blaize invites two of the men sitting nearby to join in, but they studiously mind their own business.
Still drinking his coffee, Dexer mutters gruffly, âFuck off, Blaize.â
âI could have sworn I felt some tension. Well, in that case, Rue, if you want a man, you should be withâ¦â Blaize trails off, his smile widening as he tucks his thumbs into his jeans.
I flick my gaze scornfully up and down his body. âWho, you?â
Blaizeâs smile grows wicked. âKeenan.â
âWhy should I be with Keenan?â I blurt out in surprise.
âWhy shouldnât you be with Keenan?â someone replies in a smooth, deep voice.
I breathe in sharply and turn to my other side, and see that Keenan himself is standing there, a curious expression on his handsome face and a mug of coffee in his hand.
Oh, my God. How long has he been standing there? I feel myself turning red.
Dexer tips the dregs of his coffee into the grass without looking at me. âKeenan needs some help clearing up the Blighted from around camp. You should go with him, Rue.â Then he turns and walks away.
I stare at his back in surprise. Am I imagining things, or did Dexer just agree with Blaize that I should be with his brother?
Iâm so confused.
